The interior building materials such as furniture, cabinets, molding, flooring, doors and windows have traditionally been manufactured with formaldehyde based adhesives that release formaldehyde fumes into the interior air. Formaldehyde vapor has been classified as a known human carcinogen. California Air Resources Board (CARB) has already implemented CARB PII which is the world’s toughest standard on formaldehyde emissions from interior building materials.
On July 27, 2016 the US Environmental Protection Agency finalized a rule to reduce exposure to formaldehyde vapors from interior wood products (manufactured with particleboard, medium density fiberboard and hardwood plywood) that mirrors CARB PII on formaldehyde emissions. This will be implemented throughout the United States one year after the rule is published. This means that the composite wood products that are sold, supplied, offered for sale, manufactured or imported in the US will have to be compliant with this regulation when fully implemented.
